Een vroeg exemplaar uit het eerste productiejaar. Deze heeft een hals uit kwartiersgezaagd suikeresdoorn en een toets uit hetzelfde materiaal. De body is uit dosse gezaagd esdoorn (2-delig). Ovation heeft een paar technische hoogstandjes op de Viper gebruikt: De elementen zijn welliswaar klassiek klinkende enkelspoels alnico modellen, maar ze zijn effectief afgeschermd op een manier die parasitaire wervelstromen tegengaat. Ook de manier waarop de hals is bevestigd is vrij uniek: Onder de toets zitten 4 inslagmoeren in het hout gelijmd. Hierin vallen de vier bouten die door de body lopen. Dit garandeert een perfecte uitlijning van de hals, en is ook stabieler dan de methode die Fender gebruikt.
Ondanks de innovaties voelt en klinkt de gitaar vrij klassiek. De hals heeft een comfortabel C profiel, een 12” radius toets en 24 frets met een dun profiel. De electronica zijn passief en beperkt tot het hoognodige: Een schakelaar voor de elementkeuze en een volume- en toonknop.
Dit exemplaar heeft wat gebruikssporen, maar is in zeer nette staat gezien de leeftijd. Er is altijd voorzichtig mee omgesprongen. Het enige wat niet origineel is zijn 2 pickup-hoogtestelschroefjes.

An early example from the first year of production. This one features a very nice quarter sawn maple neck and fingerboard and a 2 piece flatsawn maple body. Ovation used some of their clever engineering skills on the Viper: The pickups are classic sounding alnico single coils, but they have been shielded in an effective manner, and in such a way as to prevent parasitic eddy currents.
The neck attachment is also unique: The neck has four internal nuts mounted underneath the fingerboard, to accept the sturdy bolts that run through the body. A more stable way of bolting a neck than Fender uses.
Despite the innovations this guitar sounds and feels like a classic. The neck has a comfortable C shape, a 12” radius on the fingerboard and 24 frets in a thin profile. The electronics are passive, and straightforward with just a pickup selector switch, and master volume and tone control.
This guitar has been played, but it is in very good condition considering its age. It has been well cared for. The only thing we could find that has ever been changed are two pickup mounting screws.
